Researching Options For Debt Reduction

by Cristina Gonzales

Credit card debt can all too easily get out of hand. A few dollars here, a quick trip to the grocery store they are, back to school clothes for the kids, can all add up to a very scary financial situation. If you feel that you are drowning in debt and you are already having problems paying your monthly bills at all or even on time, it's time to look at some ideas for debt reduction possibilities.

You have your choice of profit and nonprofit organizations that specialize in providing various levels of counseling and debt reduction services. Some of the for profit companies actually ask for retainers up front. This might be a problem and a big red flag to look at. Before handing over some of your hard earned cash to a company that is requesting a retainer to work on your behalf, understand the pros and claw of the services available to you.

There are some privately held companies out there that advertise themselves as debt reduction specialists. This is how they typically work: they ask for a retainer upfront. Then they asked for a list of all your creditors with their contact information and balance information. They promise to contact each creditor on your behalf and negotiate a lower payment structure.

Many unwitting consumers have found out the hard way that these for-profit companies make their money in two major ways. The first one is simply by keeping your retainer, never doing anything for you, and disappearing from sight once your check clears. Other companies actually pretend that they are going to help you. They tell you to hand over all your credit card bills and then they give you a total monthly figure that they instruct you to pay them rather than your individual credit cards.

A common complaint from consumers who have used this type of service in the past, is that the company never paid any of the bills! They keep the money and then they disappear. It's probably months before the consumer realizes that he has been taken and that further in the hole and before. He suddenly starts getting notices from the credit card companies and from collection agencies. Not only did he not get any help in reducing his credit card bills, he is now legally responsible for paying late fees and possibly court costs and attorney's fees in addition to his regular monthly credit card bill.

Of course, consumers don't realize until they start getting notices from collection agencies and attorneys offices. At this point it's too late to do anything. Not only has your credit been completely ruined you are now in more debt than you were before. These collection agencies and credit card companies will not only be after you for your original credit card debt, they will also be trying to collect court costs and attorney's fees.

It's important to be aware of what happens to your credit report when you do decide to use a debt reduction service no matter what type it is. Once a credit card company agrees to accept a reduced monthly there is no easy way to get out of debt payment, it will appear on your credit report as probably a chargeback. If a collection agency has been involved that will appear on your credit report as well.

Obviously it's easier to control your credit card debt or find yourself in financial straits. - 41115
