Why Not Make Credit Card Payments Online

by James A Jackson

Keeping your credit card information safe should be a priority of yours every time you use your credit card. We all know of the concerns to be aware of when using it in the real world but what about when it comes to using it online? To be safe you need to be informed. Read on.

One of the simplest ways is to never provide your credit card information to anyone in an e-mail. A reputable company will never ask for your information in this manner. Guard your card number and don't randomly provide it online just because someone asks you for it!

For those people who still feel a little ill at ease about typing in their credit card number online it helps to know that as long as you are careful and conscientious about purchasing goods in the virtual world it can actually be safer than using your credit card at a store, a bar or a restaurant. Let us explore this further.

When you decide to use your credit card online to make a payment you do not have to have the funds in your bank account at the moment of purchase. Instead you are being extended credit by the credit card provider. In essence this is a small loan that you must pay back on a monthly basis. In order to make this financial arrangement legally binding all that is required is your signature.

On the other hand the use of a debit card means that there must be enough money in your account to cover the cost of whatever it is you are buying at the time that you are buying it. In order to buy something online using your debit card you require a Personal Identification Number (PIN). This electronic payment transaction method is such that when you make the purchase the money is taken out of your bank account directly.

Always make sure that the website link you are on when you are planning to disclose personal information such as your credit card number is secure. How can you do this? It is simple really. At the beginning of the link look for https:// as opposed to what you see at most websites which is http://. The s in this case means that the site is secure. Remember that- s stands for secure! If you see http instead of https then do not give your credit card information at the website under any conditions!

Do not be hasty about using your credit card number online at a website you have never shopped at before. This is especially the case if it is a relatively new business. Before you submit any of your private information to the website you should read over the privacy policy. By so doing you will have a clear understanding of how the information you provide will be used and you will also come to learn if your information will be shared and/or sold to other businesses. If you do not like what you read then do not shop at the site.

Credit cards online are a much better and safer choice when you shop than are debit cards online. This is because credit cards carry with them a greater level of protection in terms of limiting the liability you must deal with if fraudulent use were to occur. - 41115
