What Is Your Credit Score?

by John Hampton

Are you having trouble paying your bills on time? Many of us are having the same issues, either from a change in our financial circumstance or from past credit issues. If you find your credit score is lower than you think is should be, then there are a few steps you can take to improve your score easily. Here are some things you can do to help your situation.

The first thing you can do to improve your credit score is to pay your bills on time. This is very difficult to do since most of the time we avoid paying our bills is because we actually can't afford them. If this is the case, then the next first step is to contact your creditors and try to make arrangements to lower your monthly payments so you can afford them. Many credit card companies are willing to help raise your score by reducing your interest rates and even the minimum monthly payment.

The next thing you should do is dissolve as much of your debt as possible. Start with the smaller cards and work your way up. It is better to consolidate as much debt as possible, ask your creditors to help you meet an affordable monthly payment by lowering their interest rate or monthly payments.

Don't be shy about contacting these companies, many of them will work with you as long as your willing to make timely payments of any kind. You can start by setting a goal of keeping a little less than 50% debt to credit ratio on each account. This will not only help you lower your monthly bills but have a good ratio that increases your credit score significantly.

Once you get started fixing your credit, you will find you will have more credit available. Do not take advantage of this by spending more. Avoid this problem by keeping your debt to credit ratio below 50% at all times. Take that available credit number and cut it in half and you will find that your credit is more manageable and your score will improve dramatically. - 41115
