The perfect candidates for credit cards are college students. It is an easy way for tracking off what they are exactly buying since having cash is not applicable when they are living with others. Nevertheless, college kids can also be immature at times. If this is so, then it is not yet the ideal time to give them credit card. However, the question is how will you deal with your college-age kid's credit card?
If they are not managing well their accounts in terms financially, they can simply succumb to a lot of student debts. Well for that reason, the credit cards offered to most university students are really lower. Because many college students are not properly managing their debt, they tend to declare bankruptcy right after their graduation. The purpose of this article is to give you some tips on how you can deal with your college kids as well as his credit cards.
The first tip is, explain to him the full responsibility of getting a credit card. You need to inform him that if he spends too much, it is more likely that you will not help him in paying those debts. He will be the one paying all the balances; by means of either finding a summer job or selling his personal belongings.
Next, advise your child to consult you when applying for other credit cards. It is very important, since many credit card groups provide presentation at universities. Most of them offer free gifts if the student will sign up for credit card with a high-interest rates. Because your child is only after the gift he will get, he may not realize that there are other fees to be considered, such as annual fees. He may not be aware that using his credit card will not be reported to you. If that will happen, you child will tend to have as many as credit cards as he wants, with balances that will cost thousands of dollars.
Thirdly, you should allocate a monthly spending limit to your child. Around $200 is a good limit including his food. You need to give him an account book, probably a small one, so he can list all his expenses. And last, reiterate to him that the remaining balance he has should always be seen in his account.
College is the right time to learn our mistakes, and I hope that credit card issue is not one of them. Always be strict if your child will use his credit card, otherwise they will be the one who will lose. - 41115
